Tongue Thief
Long-tongued reef ambusher that snatches prey from short range.

About Tongue Thief
AggressiveReefs and ledges
Tongue Thieves wait inside reef crevices and extend a long tongue to snatch passing prey. The tongue strike is silent and short-range, so the danger is proportional to how close to the reef wall you swim. Keep one body length of clearance from any crevice and the species becomes irrelevant. If hit, break free quickly — the tongue is grippy but not infinitely strong. They are useful early-game scout targets because they reliably mark crevice positions; once you spot a Tongue Thief, you know the wall behind it has another small habitat worth checking later.
How to handle an encounter
- · Disengage on first contact. Distance beats damage trade against this species.
- · Break line of sight. Most aggressive species lose lock within a minute.
- · Engage only with a clear oxygen budget and a planned exit.
